Pyramid Scheme

All photos taken on May 12, 2021.

We were packed up early and facing a 4 hour drive home, so set off for our last hike in Jasper National Park. We sauntered out of the resort and down the road past Patricia Lake to Pyramid Lake Beaches. That’s right, there are beaches here. Now, as the ice had only been of the lake for just over a week, skinny dipping was not an option, but we did enjoy our last moments in the area.

What interesting places have you visited lately (since Covid)?

Not much to tell. After working for 3 companies over 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I had waited my entire career for……retirement. I have been exploring this new career for the past 7+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wants has been very fulfilling. Early on, there was a long list of projects in my “to-do” hopper and I attacked these projects with a vengeance for the first 9 months of retirement. Eventually, my brain told me that this was not what retirement was about, so it took me another 5 months before my industriousness again took over and I attacked another line of projects, this time somewhat shorter and less complicated, as well as many new projects related to the family weddings in 2016. After going hard for 6 weeks and 3 weddings, my body was telling me to relax, then the flu bug hit and as soon as that was done with me, my sciatic acted up. No rest for the wicked. In 2020 and 2021, the Covid 19 pandemic changed the whole retirement gig. I was lucky to not be still working, for sure. I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may never become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

    1. …and how soon autumn will return. The hot dry weather has taken a toll on the trees and shrubs in the province this year. Some of my trees are already dropping leaves. Yikes. Thanks for reading. Allan

      1. Yep. Leaves are turning here too. If I hated climate change before, I REALLY hate it now! It just ruined our short summer

  1. Are the swans coming, or leaving.. already..?lol This summer was very weird.. as we still call it a summer..
How is the smoke in your area Allan? I just saw few pictures from Canmore area, it seems very hazy.
    All the best!

    1. Jasper is only a short stop for the Trumpeter swans. They may have been heading for an area near Grande Prairie Alberta, but many nest further South near Canmore. We have not bee too bad for smoke for the past week. Mostly at at 2 or 3 AQHI, with a few bursts up to 4 and 5. We just need the heat to stop and rain to fall. The whole area is in drought conditions and the crops are in sad shape Thanks for reading Christie. Have a great weekend. Allan

    1. I hope you get as good a fall visit as we had in 2020 Bernie. It was a treat to see the Trumpeters, for sure. Thanks for reading and have a great weekend. Allan

  2. Oh and we’ve been to Douglas Provincial Park and a tiny place called Ogema. That’s it. Calgary Sept long for my MIL:s internment and then Jasper in Oct. Hoping to ski Fernie or Kimberly this winter but time will tell. That’s it – nothing to far away or out of country.

    1. We have been to Jasper in May and are just back from a one week drive to Victoria and back to help an ailing parent and get a brief meeting with our Vancouver kids. We felt comfortable in places and not in others and seem to have returned just in time (fires and 4th wave). Looking forward to a bit more travel in the fall if things work out. But, no trips to the U.S. or other countries. It is just too soon and too risky. Cheers.

  3. Great post and amazing photos, Allan, especially the one with reflections. Pyramid Lake in Jasper National Park is definitely one of the best places to visit in Jasper. Did you guys happen to visit Pyramid Island too? Thanks for sharing and have a nice day 🙂 Aiva

    1. Thanks Aiva. We passed by Pyramid Island on our first morning when we hiked up to Pyramid Bench. The island is a bit the worse for wear these days with all the trees that it has lost to the Mountain Pine Beetle. Thanks for reading. Allan

    1. Glad to see you back again. Things are well here, at least as well as can be expected. The summer is too hot and dry and smoky, but we will take what we can get. How are things in your part of the world. Hope all is well with you. Allan

      1. Hello Allan, thank you for your kind words. Yes a bit of time away was needed, a refresh and reset has done me the world of good. I have enjoyed revisiting wordpress, I’ve missed seeing your adventures. Agreed with the summer statement, I do love a beach day here and there, but am rather looking forward to Autumn/Fall 🙂 Kaya

    1. Thanks. We always try to do a mix of old and new. It never gets boring for us, so hope the same applies to my readers. I was lucky with the swan shot, even though they were so far away. I cannot believe so many of my readers commented on it as their favourite. Thanks for reading. Hope your weekend is going well. Allan
