Autumn 2020 – Part 37 – You Want a Piece of Me – Jasper National Park

October 2, 2020

Driving South on Highway 93, the Icefields Parkway, we were just South of town when we spied this strange standoff. A bull elk slowly sauntered across the highway bridge, directly toward a waiting car. As this is rutting time, you never want to make any sudden moves near a bull elk, especially one of this size, a mature 6 point Royal likely weighing between 317 and 330 kg (700 and 730 pounds).

You sit there in your metal machine,

not really knowing the things I’ve seen,

the battles I’ve fought, the hearts I’ve won,

you only think in terms of a gun.

I’m walking here and I’ll take my time,

move one inch and your fenders I’ll climb.

So, you will sit there and wait a bit,

I’ll hold you up! I don’t give a shit!

Standoff at the Athabasca
I think I’ll just turn the other antler

After working for 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I waited my entire career for……retirement. I have been exploring this new career for the past 3+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wanted me to do has been rewarding. While I still miss the social aspect of working with a team of great people, I have managed to keep in touch with many from my former team and I have many friends and family members who now fulfill this part of my life. Now that my Patty has retired, we are able to spend more time in pursuits and with people who are near and dear to us. I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may not become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

    1. Absolutely. During the rut, Parks Canada will fine you if you get out of your car and do not leave a door open for quick access. We got the best views from staying in the car on the road. Thanks for reading. Allan

  1. These are majestic animals. Canada is for sure an animal lover’s paradise and as someone who is always keen to get a glimpse of the wildlife, I know where I am going once we are allowed to travel. Take care. Aiva 🙂

    1. Our timing this day was perfect. Any earlier or later and we would have missed this sight. The bull elk and the bull moose are pretty majestic animals and deserve our full respect. Hope you get to travel there soon. We will likely be back in Jasper in May. Thanks for reading and commenting Aiva. Allan
