Today is my Patty’s birthday.

Over the years I have learned that whatever birthday cake I buy, it must be the best chocolate cake available at the time. I made a few hasty errors in judgement early on. Shortly after moving to Beaumont, there was that Sobeys grocery store white cake with sickly sweet white icing and coloured sprinkles. Disappointment was swiftly conveyed. Since then I have taken my time, done my research and managed to secure the very best cake available in honour of the occasion.

This cake is called the Duke and is available at the Duchess Bakeshop on 124 Street in Edmonton. The Duchess Bakeshop is an institution in the city and was #4 on 2015 Buzzfeed’s list of bakeries to visit before you die and finished in second place on the Le Meilleur pâtissier-Les Professionels baking show in 2018. Being voted 2nd best French bakery when you come from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is a big deal. Trust me, we have been to many bakeries in France.

So, we headed off to Duchess on a city day this past Thursday. Our quandary when we got home, was whether to wait until today for our first slice. The instructions on the box did read Best Served Fresh and if we have learned anything during Covid, it is that we must follow instructions, so waiting was not an option.

After working for 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I waited my entire career for……retirement. I have been exploring this new career for the past 3+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wanted me to do has been rewarding. While I still miss the social aspect of working with a team of great people, I have managed to keep in touch with many from my former team and I have many friends and family members who now fulfill this part of my life. Now that my Patty has retired, we are able to spend more time in pursuits and with people who are near and dear to us. I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may not become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

    1. Thanks for your wishes. This has been the cake of choice for the last 3 years or so. Many other bakeries have fallen by the wayside over time, but this one still remains, unlike the cake, which is disappearing day by day. Thanks for reading. Allan

  5. Sometimes the best choice doesn’t come with the best timing. Were there any real complaints when you dove into that awesome looking cake a few days early?

  6. I would certainly like to be able to taste this chocolate on top, but iternet does not yet allow this kind of feat. I am touched by your dedication to doing the best for those around you, it is a great quality. I wish you all the best for your wife’s special day and I hope you will have a great day.

  10. Ah interesting – our spouses share birthdays! My other half is a traditionalist and it must be confetti angel food cake from a mix with buttercream icing. Ugh. Neither of those things belong together but every year I struggle to get it iced and looking decent. This year’s attempt isn’t bad looking and he could share all he wants but I’d rather not eat it.

    1. Patty says thanks. I think she had a great day, lots of phone calls and Skypes, a take out restaurant meal (we cancelled our dine in reservation, but still ordered from the same place) and of course, there was the cake.
