Old Fort Point is a prominent bedrock hill, South of Jasper town. The trail is steep in places and provides excellent views of Jasper, Jasper Park Lodge, Lakes Edith and Annette, Lac Beauvert and Pyramid Mountain. Heading clockwise, the trail climbs gradually through forest and up rocky ridges to the top, before a steep drop down a mostly bald hill. It was beautiful on this day. (Other posts that are tied to this hike, will appear next in sequence….On the Verge and Pyramid Rainbow & Athabasca River).
- trailhead is located on Old Fort Point Road, accessible from Highway 93A (continuation of Hazel Avenue, Jasper)
- Distance 3.8 km (2.5 miles)
- Elevation gain/loss 130 m (426.5 feet)
The trailhead
The ever changing trail.

The flora and foliage
The fauna, a squirrel, two Three-toed Woodpeckers and an unknown red bug.
The views from the Red Chairs
Views on the way down from the top. The first slide is of Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and the second last is of the Athabasca River.

After working for 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I waited my entire career for……retirement.
I have been exploring this new career for the past 3+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wanted me to do has been rewarding.
While I still miss the social aspect of working with a team of great people, I have managed to keep in touch with many from my former team and I have many friends and family members who now fulfill this part of my life. Now that my Patty has retired, we are able to spend more time in pursuits and with people who are near and dear to us.
I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may not become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

This is such a beautiful trail, Allan. I’m in awe over those stunning views. If I remember correctly, then there’s even a world class golf course at the Fairmount Hotel in Jasper? Thanks for sharing such lovely autumn photos.
At the moment, Storm Aidan is rattling along the rooftops, and we are expecting damaging gusts of 130 km/ to make an appearance later on in the day 😀 Aiva

Yes, the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf course is world famous #1 in Alberta, #5 in Canada and #56 in the world out of 100. It is located in an absolutely stunning area. Yikes. Sounds like you better batten down the hatches. That should blow the ghosts and goblins around a bit. Winds gusted to 60 k/h here last night, but calmer today. Stay well and thanks for reading. Allan
